SPAH and the “Advancement” for the Diatonic Harmonica

An infatuation with the ten hole two-ounce diatonic harmonica developed long before the Society for the Preservation and Advancement of the Harmonica (SPAH) was established. Its simple design and compact size has instigated hundreds of millions of avocations for well over a century. Sensational diatonic deliveries have charmed many an audience. But, lately the old instrument’s aura has evolved, with a rather curious “perception” conjured through artful illusions. The truth: the diatonic harmonica is still tethered to its truncated scales. The “advancement” of the ten hole Richter mouth organ isn’t really a serious proposition at SPAH or anywhere else until an openness for changing the status quo is broadly considered. Truth vs illusion: Many outstanding musicians have thrived on the erroneous notion of limitless diatonic possibilities. Creative illusions can be tasteful, entertaining, and in some cases even exhilarating, but actual “advancement” within these melodic shadows for many will still be just a dream…
